PACQUIAO TO BEGIN TRAINING AT WILD CARD ON MONDAY By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Pound-for-pound hero Manny Pacquiao will begin training at the Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach for his WBO welterweight title defense against former world champion Joshua Clottey on Monday.

Pacquiao who is currently vacationing with wife Jinkee, their four children and close relatives and friends in picturesque Boracay will leave for Los Angeles on Friday, knowing that he has to train as hard as always because Clottey is a dangerous opponent.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told www.insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that the Pacquiao-Clottey fight details have been finalized and the fight will take place at the $1.2 billion Dallas Cowboys stadium of Jerry Jones which Arum described as spectacular.

Arum who watched the Dallas Cowboys game with former President George Bush and Laura Bush in the owner’s box as well as former baseball great, pitcher Nolan Ryan, said “I have never in my life seen anything like this stadium. It's unbelievable.”

He said President Bush told him “Bob you are better off without Mayweather. Everybody just wants to see Manny Pacquiao and this is a great fight and unless I am called away to make a speech I am coming to the fight.”

Arum said the kickoff press conference at the Dallas Stadium will be held on January 19 and would be “the press conference to end all press conferences with the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders performing while some of them will serve as round girls during the fight. This is stupendous.”

At the same time he branded Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer’s announced plan to stage a Mayweather fight against a still unnamed opponent at the MGM Grand on the same date as an act that “shows how malicious he (Schaefer) has become.” He said Pacquiao has to fight in March because he has to campaign for the May elections in which he is seeking the lone congressional seat from the province of Sarangani. Arum said Mayweather could fight in April or May but Schaefer was malicious and wants to stage a fight on the same day. Arum said “who cares” even as he suggested that Schaefer “go back to banking and leave boxing to the real professionals.”

Arum also touched on the alleged email referred to by ESPN boxing commentator Teddy Atlas which he said he was informed about by a source whom he trusted. The source according to Atlas claimed that some unidentified person supposedly from Team Pacquiao had asked that should Pacquiao found to be “dirty” after a blood test as demanded by the Mayweather camp whether it could be kept secret in order not to hurt the planned Pacquiao-Mayweather March 13 fight.

Arum said “there is no email. Period. This is a made-up, malicious story. Trust me, there is no email. Who will send a stupid email like that? Yes you can test but don’t say nothing if it comes back dirty. Then why test? He likened the allegations against Pacquiao without a shred of evidence to the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy who accused many individuals of being communists where “you had to prove your innocence” which was contrary to the accepted principle of being innocent until proven guilty. Arum charged “this is the same type of tactic but everybody is aware of this and public opinion is completely on Manny’s side, so we’ve moved on and don’t wish to discuss this anymore. The publicity battle is over. We’ve kicked their ass.”

President Bush: Everybody wants Pacquiao, not Mayweather by

Not that Manny Pacquiao promoter and well known Democratic Party backer and liberal leaning Bob Arum is above a bit of puffery but it's interesting to note that Arum claims former President George W. Bush is a Pacman fan.

Let's pick up this tantalizing tidbit as reported by the AP minutes ago (Greg Beacham):

Arum took in the Dallas Cowboys' playoff victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night, sitting just two seats from former President George W. Bush. Arum said Bush had the same reaction he's heard repeatedly since negotiations with Mayweather bogged down.

``Too bad you didn't get Mayweather, but what difference does it make?'' Arum said Bush told him.

``Everybody just wants see Pacquiao anyway.''

NBC TV (Emmitt Smith with Lauran and George W. Bush in Cowboy owner Jerry Jones private suite at Dallas game)

I don't see any verification or denial on that coming out of the Bush camp but there may have been some political chatter in the owner's box as the Cowboys hammered the Philadelphia Eagles to move on to another playoff game next Sunday against the tough Vikings.

Right wing windbag Rush Limbaugh was another Jerry Jones guest along with former Raiders head coach and TV analyst John Madden.

Not many people know it but Madden is a huge fight fan who had a syndicate of wealthy backs years ago who hoped to turn national amateur heavyweight champion Emory Chapman professional.

Chapman, son of a Georgia Tech college professor, had little interest in pr boxing. He and I were boxing teammates at the University of Nevada, Reno, and last I heard he became a doctor serving in the U.S. Army in Germany.

No immediate comment from President Obama on the Mayweather-Pacquiao debacle.

Official death of Mayweather-Pacquiao fight at hand by Lance Pugmire

Pac-clottey_586

The sides are no longer talking, last-minute attempts to strike a

compromise appear to be futile, and Manny Pacquiao's promoter, Bob

Arum, says he's three hours away from finalizing a site deal with

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to stage an alternative Pacquiao fight

at the team's stadium on March 13.

"If Bob's so strongly moving to the other fight, then we have no choice

but to move on," Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s promoter Richard Schaefer told

The Times this morning. "They didn't want the fight."

Mayweather and Pacquiao failed to strike a deal because of their

dispute over blood testing for performance-enhancing drugs. Pacquiao,

who has sued Mayweather for alleged defamation because of public

statements made implying the Filipino star has used those drugs, won't

accept a blood test closer than 24 days before the fight. Mayweather

wants the fighters to be subject to blood tests up to 14 days before

the fight. A Pacquiao advisor said the fighter himself has rejected the

14-day proposal.

Arum flatly said today that "the horse has left the building," in

reference to a Mayweather fight, and instead was enthused to discuss

his plans for Pacquiao's March 13 fight against welterweight contender

Joshua Clottey. Clottey lost a decision last year to Miguel Cotto, who

later lost to Pacquiao by 12th-round TKO in November.

"This place [Cowboys Stadium] is absolutely sensational; the boxing

fans will love it," Arum said. "I can't even properly describe it

without sounding crazy."

Arum attended Saturday night's Cowboys-Philadelphia Eagles game in

Jones' private suite, a gathering that placed the liberal promoter in

the same box as former President George W. Bush and conservative

talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh.

"They both love Pacquiao, and [Bush] said he'll come to the fight if

his schedule allows," Arum said.

Arum said Pacquiao will earn a minimum $10 million for the Clottey

bout, with seating capacity being placed at 50,000.

Meanwhile, the Mayweather camp is considering its options for March 13

and beyond.

Take a fight at MGM Grand against someone liker Paulie Malignaggi? Wait

until a later date, like May 1, and fight longtime rival Shane Mosley

if he defeats Andre Berto on Jan. 30?

Schaefer said Mayweather is willing to fight Mosley, a pairing that

will conclude years of jawing between the two gifted foes that have

long been near the top of the world's top pound-for-pound lists. Mosley

is currently a world welterweight champion.

"At 147 pounds, the man to beat is 'Sugar' Shane Mosley," Schaefer

said. "Floyd will take that fight, and will shut up all those who are

saying he's a coward."
